Common Types of Workplace Injuries

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the 4 most common types of fatal construction accidents involve being crushed by machinery, falling from heights, being struck by flying objects, and suffering electric shock from exposed wiring. However, even employees who have desk jobs are at risk for developing repetitive strain injuries. Our firm has represented countless workers who have suffered on-the-job injuries and occupational diseases.

Common types of occupational injuries include:

  1. Repetitive stress injuries. Straining your wrists at a computer all day, lifting heavy loads, working with your arms above your head for extended hours, or performing other repetitive movements may cause your muscles and ligaments to become inflamed. The most common types of repetitive stress injuries are carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff tears, stress fractures, tendonitis, bursitis, and other forms of muscle and ligament sprains and strains.
  2. Catastrophic injuries. Catastrophic injuries include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, multiple fractures, accidental amputations, and severe burns. They commonly affect workers in the manufacturing and construction industries. They could be caused by explosions, falling from a scaffold, getting struck by machinery, and being involved in an on-the-job vehicle accident.
  3. Back, neck, and shoulder injuries. Back injuries include disc herniation, spinal cord compression, and muscle strains. Injuries to the neck and shoulders may occur from repetitive strain. If you are required to lift heavy loads on a daily basis, or you have to work in a crouched position for long periods of time (such as if you work in the plumbing industry), you may be at risk for developing neck, back, and shoulder injuries. Poor posture could also contribute to back, neck, and shoulder pain.
