Types of Catastrophic Injuries
There are 4 main types of catastrophic injuries:
- Traumatic brain injuries. Traumatic brain injuries are caused by blunt force trauma to the head, leading to bruising, swelling, and inflammation of the brain. Symptoms include dizziness, coma, nausea, chronic headaches, mood swings, tinnitus, depression, anxiety, blurred vision, cognitive impairment, confusion, and personality changes.
- Spinal cord injuries. The spinal cord is responsible for sending signals between the brain and the body. Damage to the spinal cord could lead to partial or full paralysis. Paralysis of the lower limbs is known as paraplegia, and paralysis of all 4 limbs is known as quadriplegia.
- Severe burns. Third and fourth-degree burns over large sections of the body are considered catastrophic. The affected area may appear charred or blackened, and victims could suffer permanent nerve damage, chronic pain, scarring, and impaired mobility.
- Traumatic orthopedic injuries. Traumatic orthopedic injuries include broken bones or fractures that require multiple surgeries. Nerve damage, chronic pain, and limited mobility could result from a traumatic orthopedic injury.
