What Should I Do If I’m the Victim of a Head-On Car Accident in New York?

Earlier this month, there was a head-on collision in Colonie that left two people seriously injured. According to The Daily Gazette, a digital news outlet that covers stories in Schenectady and throughout the Capital Region, the head-on car accident happened on a Tuesday night on Troy-Schenectady Road. Police reported that the head-on crash happened just before 9 pm and involved a 2020 Jeep and 2019 Volkswagen.

Prior to the wreck, witnesses said that the driver of the Jeep was driving erratically in the eastbound lane of Troy-Schenectady Road. Reportedly, the Jeep eventually crossed over to the westbound lane into the path of the Volkswagen, leading to the head-on collision.

Police and firefighters arrived at the accident scene to find both vehicles heavily damaged. They removed the drivers from their vehicles. Both drivers were seriously injured and had to be transported to Albany Medical Center for treatment.

At the time of this report, the Colonie Police Traffic Division was still investigating this incident and no charges had been filed.

What to Do If You’re Injured in a Head-On Car Accident in New York

Due to the nature of head-on collisions, which often involve both vehicles crashing into each other at a high rate of speed, drivers and passengers usually suffer severe injuries. That is why it is important to act quickly following a head-on car accident, because with injuries of this type, time is of the essence. If injury victims aren’t treated right away, these injuries can inflict permanent damage or even claim their lives.

The following are a few tips for what to do if you’re injured in a head-on car accident:

  • Call 911
  • Seek immediate medical attention (for yourself and/or anyone else who is injured)
  • If possible, take pictures of the accident scene, vehicles, and your injuries
  • If possible, exchange insurance information with the other driver
  • If possible, gather the contact information of the other driver, passengers, and any witnesses
  • Report the accident to your insurance provider (tell the truth but do not admit fault)
  • If possible, remain at the accident scene until police arrive (tell police what happened but do not admit fault)
  • Do not speak with the other driver’s insurance company or legal representation until you have spoken with your own lawyer first

In addition to tending to yourself and any other injury victims involved in the accident, you should reach out to an experienced car accident attorney as soon as possible following the wreck. You need to know what your options are, especially if you suffered serious injuries and/or your vehicle suffered major damage. An experienced personal injury lawyer will be able to examine your situation, determine if you have a valid claim, and help you hold those at fault for your pain and suffering accountable.
