New York's Texting While Driving Laws

New York does not take the act of negligent or distracted driving lightly. New York was one of the first states to implement laws prohibiting drivers from using handheld devices behind the wheel. This means drivers operating motor vehicles cannot send text messages, or send emails. New York has recently passed laws that prevent texting while driving.

In further efforts to prevent texting while driving, New York has enacted harsher penalties for drivers caught texting behind the wheel - especially for teens and young drivers with learners' permits and junior licenses. In early July, Governor Cuomo passed a law that would suspend the license of young drivers for 60 days if they are caught texting, emailing, or operating a handheld device behind the wheel.
